Posting Vertical Posts

When preparing a garage door for hurricanes or high winds, one alternative to large horizontal struts is the vertical post concept. Here are a few tips on proper use of vertical posts:

· Since vertical posts transmit wind load forces to the header and floor, a design professional should first assess the strength of the building structure.

· Doors using vertical reinforcement posts must comply with industry standards (ANSI/DASMA 102). DASMA has recently established DASMA 108 as approved air pressure testing criteria for garage doors.

· In all cases, the homeowner must accept responsibility for properly securing the vertical post according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

· DASMA discourages the use of aftermarket vertical post systems that are beyond the scope of the door manufacturer’s instructions. These can be dangerous and may void the manufacturer’s warranty.

· If you have any questions, be sure to contact the garage door manufacturer or a trained garage door service technician.

For more information on proper use of vertical posts, get a copy of the new DASMA Technical Data Sheet #153, prepared by the members of DASMA’s Commercial & Residential Garage Door Division Technical Committee. To obtain a free copy of TDS 153, contact DASMA at 216-241-7333, fax 216-241-0105, or
